Companionay Hatch - i550 Sailboat

It was warm again in the Icebox this weekend so it seemed like a good time to get outside. After reading that Kevin intended to cut out his companionway on Pipedream, I decided to take the plunge and do the same. I carefully cut the top of the cabin top back ten inches which leaves about ten inches between the mast and hatch to mount sail handling hardware. Sure makes it easier to get in and out of the cabin. I intend to use the piece I cut out as the top hatch.

So the plan now is to cut two inch wide strips of plywood and bond them in place flat around the inside of the companionway to make a frame for the top hatch to sit on and to divert water from around the hatch down into the cockpit.

  2. Thanks, Tokyo. It is very easy to get in and out now with the keel out of the way. With the keel up, I have to squeeze past. I didn't want to cut the hole too wide fore and aft because I wanted to leave space up there to mount hardware so I figured ten inches was just about the bare minimum clearance to squeeze past when the keel is up.
